International Day of Happiness

Tomorrow is the UN International Day of Happiness, with the idea being that they want people to reclaim their happiness away from material things and fake images of happiness that we are shown on a daily basis.

This got me thinking, so often we are bombarded with peoples images on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social platforms that we can find ourselves comparing our lives to others, and research suggests that this actually makes people more miserable than it does anything else. The beauty of social media is that we can share images and snapshots of what is going on in our lives, but sometimes we probably ought to take a step back and think about what effect this may be having, not only on us but on those around us. I would also suggest that we are all keen to put our best selves forward, why the hell not, but this is also a bit of a tainted view of reality.

I often think long and hard about what it is that makes me happy, there are the ever changing fads I go through which sometimes make me happy, material things and trends. But I'm far more interested in what it is that makes me happy without depending on objects or finances.

Here are my top 3 things which make me happy...

  • Spending quality time with those I care about. I'm very much a people person and I love spending time with my friends, family and loved ones and being surrounded by people I care about even if we aren't actually doing anything in particular, that really makes me happy. Spending time with these people and making memories with them is certainly something to cherish.
  • Having a sister. Having a sister means having a best friend who you never asked for, or at least it does to me. There is something extra special about having a sister though because unlike some friendships, sisterhood seems to mean we are able to overcome situations which friends may not, tiffs, and fall outs, and heated disagreements because you are tied to each other through being family. Me and my sister also seem to have this bond and likeness that I don't think I will find in a friend, sometimes we are so similar and can make each other laugh so much and yet we are so different. Being someones sister certainly makes me happy.
  • Dogs. As I have mentioned before I am an absolute dog nut! I may not be in a position to have my own, but when I do get to spend time with a friends pets this inevitably makes me happy. I don't know about crazy cat ladies but there is a high likelihood I might turn into a crazy dog lady.
  • Laughing. Laughing so hard that your stomach hurts, your face aches, tears roll down your cheeks and you end up forgetting why you began laughing in the first place.
The list is endless and every day there are snapshots of things or moments which add to my being happy. I think this awareness day is a great idea in encouraging people to take stock of what it is we have in our lives and what makes us genuinely happy rather than being marred by the images in the media and on social platforms over the internet. I also think this is a great way to encourage spreading happiness on to others, maybe there is one thing we can each try and do on a daily basis to lift someones mood, be it complimenting someone on their appearance or letting someone know how much we appreciate them.....every little helps.

What makes you happy? If your getting involved, why not add the #happinessday to your post and share what makes you happy.
